Your Community, Your Choice

The Neighborhood Representatives who are appointed to serve as the Nominating Committee, are tasked with identifying, interviewing, and recommending qualified candidates for the Board of Trustees. Additional nominations can also be made by the community, with elections taking place soon after.

This is a critical time for the community, and every vote matters. Whether you want to maintain the current standards, amenities, and lifestyle features or advocate for change, understanding the candidates’ goals is essential. This will help ensure that the Board is working toward the shared vision of the community.

In addition to legal guidelines, the Community Association Institute (CAI), a leading advisory organization for associations, offers insight on what to look for in a trustee. Some key questions include:

  • Do they have the time? Board members must devote several hours each month to meetings and other association duties. In addition to regular board meetings, they need to be available for discussions and special meetings.

  • Can they make tough decisions? Board members are responsible for conducting the business of the association. This includes more than just budget approvals; they also develop and enforce policies for the greater good of the community.

  • Can they balance work and community engagement? Beyond policies and decision-making, trustees should help foster a sense of community. Being present and engaged in community events is as important as policy decisions.

Some qualities that make a strong board member include good character, integrity, calm judgment, and a commitment to the community’s best interests. It’s also important to be wary of candidates who have personal agendas, struggle to collaborate, or lack experience in leadership and service roles.

Voting is one of the most important responsibilities for community members. Your vote can impact property values, monthly fees, and overall quality of life. The Board is made up of residents like you, and they rely on your input and feedback to meet your expectations and serve the community effectively.

If you have questions about Board activities or candidate goals, consider attending board meetings or reaching out to the Board through your community’s website.
